First Meeting: Let's Get Started

We'd like to set up a preliminary meeting of the Sterling Place Block Association for sometime next month (July). The purpose of the meeting will be to get started setting up the organizational nuts and bolts.
* working up a set of by laws
* setting a list of priorities
* delegating tasks

What are the things that you'd like to improve on the block, and in our neighborhood? Where do you think we should focus our energies as a block association?

Some of the things that we are hearing neighbors express concern about include:

1. Traffic that speeds unchecked down the block (we've got a petition going to try to get a speed bump put in)
2. The need for more street lamps across the street
3. Getting the merchants across the street to put in building lights and keep their building areas clean and graffiti-free
4. Concern about the Atlantic Yards project and how it will affect the quality of life on our block

We want to hear more thoughts and ideas from as many neighbors as possible.

The first step is setting a date. If you are interested in participating in our community-building, please email sterlingplaceba@gmail.com and let us know what meeting dates in July would be good for you.

Thanks, and we look forward to hearing from you.

The Stoop Sale Rocked!

Thanks to all for the great participation in the block-wide stoop sale last Saturday. The weather was just about perfect for this kind of event, sunny but not too hot, and at one point the passing crowds of shoppers were as thick as Times Square (well, almost!). Four buildings on the block joined in--168,164,150 and 140--and a profitable and neighborly time was had by all.

Today in the New York Times there's an interesting article about the "Freegans"--folks who have stopped buying products, preferring to scavange, trade or barter goods to help save the planet.

Well, here on Sterling Place, we're right on top of that "green" trend, recycling our surplus stuff and furniture for others to use.

We plan to organize another mega stoop sale for September. Stay tuned--and start collecting your castoffs

Here are the details:
